## Exercises For Speed Reading

When it comes to doing exercises for speed reading, people often say that they need a course in speed reading but they don’t have time to take it because of the great amount of reading they already have to do. From the morning newspaper to combining through endless e-mails, many of us are drowning in information. If too much reading is keeping you from becoming a speed reader, maybe you should reconsider. Although initial exercises for speed-reading may entail extra time at first, within two weeks you should be reading fast enough to practice not only rapid reading but to read or study your required material as well. So if you don’t have the time to do both, now is the time to learn speed reading.

Doing exercises for speed reading and learning the skills of efficient reading is relatively simple. Just listen to the audio program introduced later in this article and do the exercises for speed-reading presented in the program, and after the first few weeks, which will go by very quickly, you will gain much skill in fast reading

If you apply yourself consistently and do the exercises for speed-reading, you’ll be reading at least 10% faster and probably much more than you are right now. Of course as you learn to read faster, you will speed through faster in your everyday reading as well.

Speed-reading is not a difficult skill to learn. Most of the learning we do as adults is considered conceptual learning, that is quite different from developing a skill. Conceptual learning is mainly a process of developing an understanding of the subject which can be often done through listening or reading. This is primarily intellectual. In developing a skill like speed-reading and in performing speed-reading exercises, there is also an understanding, but this understanding must be coupled with practice of what you’re learning.

When doing speed-reading exercises, it is generally best to practice a little bit every day. If you try to learn it all at once you may wind up understanding how it is done, but not be able to do it very well. To get the most out of the speed reading audio program presented later in this article, I suggest that you listen to it at least once every day. It is often hard to start learning a new skill. We tend to put it off until later in the day, especially when you first start learning exercises for speed-reading. So setting a definite time aside each day to practicing your speed-reading reading is imperative.

By doing exercises for speed-reading every day, for the most difficult type of reading, such as technical or study reading, the average student should be able to cut one third to one half the time from her studying and understanding the material much better. If you are a professional or business person you should be able to read reports, e-mails, regular mail and professional journals two to four times faster than you are doing right now, when you you do the exercises for speed-reading.

Consistently doing exercises for speed-reading everyday, will allow you not only to learn to read faster, but also learn how to read better. This means how to get better comprehension when you read, how to remember what you read, how to determine your purpose for reading different types of material, and how to concentrate better. Reading is a very complex skill and there are many new things to find out about it. Whatever your reading needs, if you apply yourself to the audio lesson provided later, you will begin to improve immediately, and, within a few weeks, become not only a very fast reader but an efficient one as well.

When it comes to speed-reading, the first thing you should do is test yourself and evaluate your current reading abilities. This means establishing your beginning reading rate, and how much you can retain of what you have read.

Before you begin your exercises for speed-reading, you should know why you read slowly. First you must know something about how your eyes work when you read. The eyes are constantly moving around in little jerk movements. In order to see something, it is important for your eyes to stop and fixate on an object for a brief moment in order to register an impression. It’s somewhat like taking a picture with a camera.

Up until now you have been taught to read one word at a time, which means the rate of about 240 words per minute on average. This is because your eyes need a quarter of a second to fixate on an object. So, if you read one word at a time, like you were taught to do in school, you read one word every quarter of a second. With a little bit of math, that comes to four words per second or about 240 words per minute for the average reader.

But that’s not all, it’s more than likely that in reality you read fewer than 240 words per minute. As an average reader, you probably make many regressions, that is looking back at words 10 to 11 times for every 100 words read. So this means your actual average reading rate is about 215 words a minute. These unconscious reading regressions exist because poor habits were formed when you first learn to read in school. When you follow the exercises for speed-reading offered in the audio program prsented at our website, you will learn how to eliminate this habit shortly and immediately increasing your reading rate.
