If you pay attention to the economies of the richest countries in the world; they have a strong education system where there are children who excel academically in all or most subjects. The reason education is linked to a strong economy is because it is with education that you can have a workforce that has the skills for the jobs in your economy. When America had a strong economy and was the world leader, we had a great education system. However, the current state of our education system is that students are not graduating with the skills for the jobs that are currently available in our economy. There are several reasons for this, but my main theory behind it is that not enough kids or parents are thinking about their future as it relates to connecting their education to their future careers.
I remember when I was growing up, I remember always knowing that I was going to get good grades so I could go to college and get a good job. Even my classmates, who had no aspirations to go to college, had some plan in mind for a career, job, or business after they graduated from high school. However, today’s K-12 students and parents miss this connection to their education and their place in the future workforce; this disconnect takes place at all socioeconomic levels. So why do people wonder where all the jobs are going? The question we should be asking ourselves is, am I preparing myself and my children for the jobs available in today’s and future economy?
We prepare our children for the future workforce in two ways; research industry trends in the US and the global economy and encourage them to achieve academic results and enhance the classroom experience with extracurricular activities. In the United States and the global economy. It is true that jobs and sectors are disappearing, but there are sectors of the economy where there are many jobs that remain unfilled. The reason jobs in some sectors go unfilled is because there aren’t people with the skills and knowledge to do the job. The world is moving towards an educated workforce; meaning that individuals in the economy of the future will need to have a particular skill set or knowledge base in order to fill them. Most jobs in this new economy will require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, but there are some industries that only require technical training. The key to ensuring your child has a place in the future workforce is to research trends and sectors of the economy; most can be found on the Department of Labor and other government websites. Once you find the job trends, look at your child’s academic strengths and interests and target a career path that is part of today’s and future economy. In the STEM sector, there are many jobs available now and being created as new STEM fields emerge daily.
The second thing we need to do is for our children to see the connection between what they do in the classroom today and their career choices in the future. There are huge benefits for students who achieve academically and participate in extracurricular activities. Classroom grades and standardized test scores are the tools used to measure student performance. Students and parents shouldn’t wait until high school to see the importance of grades and standardized test scores. There are public policy decisions for society as a whole that are made based on the standardized test scores of third graders. In addition, your child’s educational path will also be determined by his or her teachers and principals based on third grade test scores. Therefore, parents should encourage and support academic achievement from the first day your child enters school; from Pre-K. An environment that encourages and supports academic achievement means checking and doing homework with your child. It also includes finding tutorial support for subject areas where students may struggle to ensure academic success in all subject areas. The final part of encouraging academic achievement is being a part of your child’s standardized test preparation. There are countless studies that show that when parents are an active part of their children’s education, children do better academically.
The classroom should not be the only place where students have learning experiences. Children should participate in extracurricular activities that support their interests and strengths. Students who are interested in math and science should participate in math and science clubs and competitions. Students must also participate in summer and extracurricular programs in their area of interest. Finally, students should participate in as many events as possible in their area of interest, such as visiting museums, attending career fairs, etc.
The great thing about education is that it is not only a tool to train and equip students with skills, but it opens the eyes to the possibilities.
