Making Eating Healthy Fun and Entertaining for Children

You may be aware of the alarming obesity statistic that currently affects more than 33 percent of all American adults, but what you may not know is that 17 percent of our nation’s youth are also obese. The scary thing is that unless children are explicitly taught about the importance of taking care of their bodies and eating nutritious foods, this statistic will only get worse over time.

Depending on how old your kids are and the types of foods and snacks they regularly eat, it may or may not be easy to get your kids to eat healthily. Just as a child will continue to eat candy if they have access to it, so will unhealthy snacks like chips, cookies, and donuts. If we allow children to eat unhealthy snacks and also provide them with these options, then we are essentially to blame if our children become overweight or obese.

From my experience as an elementary school teacher, I have noticed a wide range of snacks that students bring to school to eat during recess. Unfortunately, most of the options I have seen are very detrimental to the health and nutrition of a child’s developing body.

I have always had the students bring bags of chips, donuts, and cookies. Fortunately, our school recently took a big leap forward and banned these options which no longer allows students to bring these types of snacks to school. Before that, I had some students bring a bag of Takis Chips (basically spicy Cheetos) every day and when I would frustratingly ask them why, I would get an answer like “Because they taste good and my mom buys them for me!”

The sad part of the whole situation is that the students didn’t even realize that those snacks were unhealthy.

If you’re in the process of developing a healthier lifestyle and want your kids to do the same, one way to get them interested and excited is to make healthy snacking fun and intriguing. Of course, the effectiveness of this whole process depends on your child’s age, but you may find that if you show enthusiasm and devotion to eating in a healthier way, they will easily buy into it.

Healthy snack options

=====================

The presentation of the snack will be the main selling point in getting your little ones to gobble up the healthy stuff. Creativity and ingenuity will be valuable assets in this process.

For example, have you seen these elegant fruit delivery baskets from Edible Arrangements that are essentially cut-outs of fruit on a stick? You can easily make this yourself (or with your child) by simply using various cookie cutter shapes and piping sticks and then putting together several types of fruit shapes. By doing this, you have the opportunity to get your kids to eat various fruits like watermelon, oranges, pineapple, grapes and apples. Literally anything that can be sliced and diced is a possible option to experiment with to see if your child will like it. This is a fun way for kids to enjoy the colorful display and also eat a nutritious snack.

You can even put pieces of fruit in the jelly, let it harden, and then use the cookie cutters to make a healthy snack. Kids love jelly!

Also consider pairing snacks like strawberries with low-fat flavored yogurt. Or cereals such as Grape Nuts, Special K and Cheerios with flavored yogurt also make a great combination.

The first time you give these snacks to your child, make them as attractive as possible. For example, put the yogurt in a circular shape on a plate and then place small piles of raisins to make it look like a giant cookie. Or a yogurt snake shape on the plate and its spots, eyes and smile made of cereal. You can also make the yogurt into a mountain shape (you may have to freeze it a bit) with a trail of Cheerios spiraling around it and up to the top where you place a miniature flag.

Whatever it takes to make snack time fun and enjoyable for your child is what counts!

Fruit smoothies are another option that you should definitely look into as there are so many different flavors and options that you can create. Experiment to find out which types your family enjoys and keep these recipes on hand. You can even garnish the fruit smoothie with a small tropical drink umbrella or even one of your cut-up fruit creations to spice up the visual presentation even more.

To top it off, come up with creative names for your smoothie creations, like “The Orange Blast” and garnish with a swirl of orange peel, or the “Pineapple Perfection” with a star-cut pineapple slice on top edge of the glass Soon your child may be saying, “Mom/Dad, let’s make an orange explosion!”

Build and maintain your arsenal of healthy snacks

=======================================

Keep a small recipe book for kids in the kitchen where you add each of your healthy snacks that were successful. Pretty soon you’ll have your child looking at this book to see what healthy snack they want for the day. In essence, this is what you ideally want, your kids choosing healthy snacks on their own without you needing to force them.

Focusing on presenting healthy snacks will make the experience even more engaging and memorable for your kids. You’ll revel in their excitement and enthusiasm for healthy change and discover that those fattening, artery-clogging bags of chips are a thing of the past.
