Healthy Meal of the Week 10 With Healthy Leftover Idea

Healthy food: Turkey Bacon Lettuce Wraps with Fruity Cheeseburger

Healthy Leftover Idea: Patty Melts

Do you want to eat healthy and at the same time enjoy an American classic? Sure, the traditional cheeseburger with fries and a soda won’t be particularly healthy for you, but there’s still a way to enjoy a portion of this meal without sacrificing much in terms of flavor.

While the meal below may seem a little strange at first, don’t knock it until you try it. Like most healthy meal alternatives, you just need to be willing to try something new and you might be pleasantly surprised. By removing the chips (fries) and calorie/sugary drink (reheated) and swapping out the 200-calorie bread for a lettuce leaf (virtually 0 calories), you’re looking at a meal that could have been over 1,800 calories . now there are only about 400. That should make you smile big as you enjoy the savory flavor of these Turkey Bacon Lettuce Wraps.

*Remember, drink water or another 0 calorie beverage so you don’t add extra unnecessary calories to this meal.

Necessary equipment

– pan/pan for cooking buns

– a large bowl

– spatula

– tongs to turn pieces of bacon

Ingredients

(6 servings)

– 2 pounds of ground turkey

– 1 package of turkey bacon (Oscar Mayer red package)

– 1 head of lettuce

– slices of low-fat mozzarella cheese

– A1 sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)

optional: slices of tomato and onion

Non-stick spray or pan oil

Various fruits to your taste. This example used grapes, bananas, apples and peaches

seasonings salt, pepper, garlic powder, chopped onion

For Leftover Patty Melts:

– Whole wheat bread

– butter

Indications

1. Place the whole package of ground turkey in a large bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of chopped onion, 4 tablespoons of A1 sauce and a few dashes of seasoned salt, pepper and garlic powder. With clean hands, mix everything well.

2. Once the meat is mixed, form turkey burgers. Use your hands to make flat circular discs about 5 inches in diameter. They will shrink about an inch after cooking.

3. Use non-stick spray or a light coating of oil on the pan, place it over medium heat and place the turkey burgers. Use a spatula and carefully turn the potatoes every 4-5 minutes.

4. When the burgers are golden brown on each side, looking almost done, you can add cheese on top if you like. If you are unsure, use a knife to cut into the center of a cake to inspect the color. Note that once you add the cheese, you can no longer flip the burgers, so make sure before you add the cheese, the turkey burgers are almost done cooking.

5. For the turkey bacon, you can choose to cook the traditional way in a pan, turning with tongs every few minutes until cooked to your liking. Another way is to place a paper towel on a microwave-safe plate, place the pieces of turkey bacon side by side, and then cover with another paper towel. Microwave for two minutes, then turn the pieces over, put them back, and microwave for another two minutes. You may need to repeat depending on how many pieces you put in and how well done you like your bacon. If you need more time, reduce it to just one minute and check afterwards before repeating.

6. Carefully peel the large lettuce leaves, wash them gently and dry them with a clean paper towel. Place inside a turkey cheeseburger with 2 strips of turkey bacon. You can add mustard and some ketchup or mayo if you like, just be careful not to use too much. Wrap the lettuce to seal it as best as possible. You may want to use two pieces of lettuce so that the turkey bacon cheeseburger is completely wrapped.

7. Finally, slice/chop the fruit to your liking and place in a bowl to serve alongside your healthy Turkey Bacon Lettuce Wrap!

Leftover food idea: You can choose to bring one of these wonderful lettuce-wrapped turkey burgers to work the next day, but try to keep the lettuce separate from everything else until you’re ready to eat. Wrapping separately or with a dry paper towel wrapped around the lettuce will do the trick.

If you want something a little different, you can choose to make cakes. Just like making a grilled cheese sandwich, lightly butter two pieces of whole wheat bread, place one piece of bread buttered side down in a skillet (medium heat). Then place one of the leftover cooked turkey cheeseburgers on top along with a piece of lettuce and/or tomato and finally the second piece of bread but this time butter side up. Use a spatula to flip the melted cake every 4-5 minutes until each side is golden brown. Cut them in half and store in a plastic container to enjoy for lunch the next day.
