Drawing Tips And Techniques
Here are some things I’ve found some things that have helped me draw better.
All these techniques and tips are based on Win Wengers principle of Image Streaming. Image streaming is very useful and I have found it especially useful for improving myself.
Before I begin, I want to say something about the human brain. It is very important to know what your brain can do and what it does in order to learn at its best. I’m still learning more about the brain, but here are some things I’ve learned.
More pleasure, less pain
Your brain turns away from pain and toward pleasure. Most of you probably already know this, but I’ll give you an example anyway.
I’ll use homework as an example, because everyone likes homework =D. Some people don’t like doing homework because it provokes them pain (ie boredom, confusion, other things you don’t like) but enjoy drawing because it gets the creative juices flowing and the brain is engaged ie pleasure But you end up doing your homework anyway because you don’t want to hear it pain of parents yelling, teacher yelling, detention, failing the test, etc.
Repetition, repetition, repetition
Another important thing about the brain is this You get more than you reinforce”. Very important rule. For example, the more you put off homework, the easier it is to procrastinate. The more you view your images, the easier it will be to view them next time.
Yes, fear and stress shut down vital parts of your brain, including your creative part. So you need to be calm when you draw (although some people draw just to express themselves). You generally do best when you approach things playfully and with curiosity (beginner’s mind).
Last note, everyone is unique in their learning and what they prefer. This is what has worked for me, but I know everyone is different. So I encourage people to experiment.
First of all, you YOU MUST ENJOY! =) It may seem trivial, or even common sense, isn’t that why you’re drawing in the first place?
But you’d be surprised what people think when they draw. Examples of this are “I have to make this picture good so I can show it to my friends”, “I have to make it good or people will let me down”. and another that is the limit: “I have to do it right so I will be happy with my photos.” You don’t have to be afraid! I know this sounds cliche, but a lot of people fall into this trap of fear and stress and wondering why their pictures aren’t good. Through traditional schooling, yes, your conscious mind is trained and trained to focus. But your subconscious, the one that comes up with all these images from the drawing (as well as other very important information) is hindered. That’s because we were all told to pay attention in class.
This meant that you had to ‘suppress’ your unconscious mind in order to focus, as the images that flashed by distracted you from what you were doing.
So your wonderful mind is forgotten, and some people even “forget” how to draw mind pictures after traditional school. So remember, if you see something strange and some images pop up, don’t turn it off, let it flow and it will encourage your creative mind to keep doing what it does best.

human brain? This is drawing and art, right? not psychology? Bad! Of course, the human brain is vital to your drawing skills. Depending on your mood and state of mind, you can draw bright pictures or fall into a slump or an art block. I’ll tell you how to get rid of them later.

Get rid of a falling art
A lot of people know that and they know it well =D For those people who don’t know what I’m talking about, an art crash/block is when you can’t draw something, or you can’t draw properly and you know it. you can’t, so no.
There are a couple of solutions to this:
- One, you might not have fun. Surprisingly, some people can have blogs, similar to the blog people have for math. You know the one that makes you go “Aaah~! I don’t like math, I always do it! Waaah~!”. This statement about yourself is very true, but only because it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You made me think just by saying it. Funny how the brain works =). Other reasons are probably because of one (or many) bad experiences (like getting a low grade on a test, the teacher going so slow that you get bored and don’t understand, or someone severely criticized your work and did you feel bad). While drawing may not be as blocked as math, it may be there and filling your drawing. One way to do this is to do the denoising technique in Win Wengers article: “How to Unblock Blocks and Get Rid of Phobias”. I found this technique very useful especially for maths =P. So if you have that artist block, use the denoise technique on it and it should clear up.
- When you have a burst of inspiration, stop what you’re doing IMMEDIATELY and start writing (or drawing) things about your inspiration. It can be a great image you have in your head, a sudden vision of how to draw clothes or draw in a specific way. DO THIS! It will encourage the spontaneous and creative side and it will be easier to get rid of this block. Remember “you get more than you give” =P.
If you can’t draw it or write it down, describe it out loud to yourself (or in your head). Or use your powerful tool, imagination. Imagine drawing it, or watching events unfold or whatever.
- One last thing, an easy way to unlock yourself is to get inspiration from different sources. It can be from TV, an anime, looking at pictures, a person or even some trivial object like a tree. Waiting for that inspiration is also an option (but it might encourage you to stop drawing on every little block you come across, which isn’t a good thing =P)
