Logical Thinking – Is It Good or Bad?

Jean Piaget, one of the many founders of psychology, identified the threshold of logical thinking in the third stages of cognitive development. In the concrete operational stage, Piaget observed that logical thinking becomes evident in a child’s ability to use appropriate logic. Logic is characterized by ideas, concepts, facts, judgment, reasoning and conclusion; and is one of the foundations of human intelligence.

I like to describe logic as a step-by-step analysis of problems from an objective point of view. Highly logical thinkers are much more intelligent and have impressive decision-making and problem-solving skills. It is also known that if a person practices logical thinking, he can become more intelligent. At the same time, logical thinking has its limits based on structural requirements; the exclusion of emotional intelligence; and the generalization it entails.

Structural requirements

Logical thinking is associated with atheism; I think this is a result of the narrow thinking involved in logic. I say this because logical thinking consists of ideas, concepts, facts and conclusions. The reasoning involved in ideas, concepts, facts and conclusions is developed analytically step by step. In other words, logical thinking is narrow in the sense that logic requires structure. For example, when solving a math problem, getting the correct answer requires step-by-step calculations using structured formulas. There is no deviation from the structured steps and formulas, in order to get the correct answer. In comparison, some logical thinkers will only believe in tangible reality, they have to see it to believe it. It is impossible if not difficult for some logical thinkers to deviate from tangible reality or believe in the invisible.

Emotional intelligence

Logic is also described as abstract thought or a higher form of thought; it is the ability to become emotionally independent excluding emotions or emotional intelligence. Making judgments and decisions without any emotional attachment is a powerful tool, especially for people with emotional problems or suffering from depression and anxiety. Emotions can cloud our thinking and lead to poor judgment and decision making. Keep in mind that emotional intelligence is essential to developing healthy relationships, so logic alone has its limits.

generalization

Logical thinking leads to the generalization that is commonly used in scientific methods of reasoning. A general idea, concept, statement, law, principle, or proposition broadly applied to test a hypothesis, in order to determine a generalized fact. Generalization is similar to stereotypes that we know can have a negative impact on society as a whole.

conclusion

Without logic it would be difficult to perform simple tasks like cooking or planning our day. Logical thinking is essential in the processes of reasoning, problem solving and decision making. Logic allows us to be emotionally independent so that our emotions do not wreak havoc in our lives. Like everything else in life (excluding energy), there are limits; logical thinking is limited to its structural requirements that exclude emotional intelligence. The generalization associated with logic does not take into account the many small possibilities, which in my opinion is a form of narrow thinking. To answer the question “is logical thinking good or bad?” It is good and bad, there is a place and a time for everything; it’s all about balance.

“Too much of anything, even a good thing is bad” Shakespeare
