All parents have big dreams for their children. Fame, fortune, happiness, security, love, confidence, success and a good education to name a few. Parents of students in Long Island schools have dreams like these, too. A lot of these kids are told as they grow up that college is what you do after high school, end of the discussion. Of course, most if not all parents would like to see their children go to college.
But let’s look at the big picture; not all graduates want to go to a 2 or 4 year college. They are eager to enter the workforce, earn a paycheck, and are very tired of homework. Students attending Long Island schools represent both college and work goals, but only one of these groups is actually receiving the education they need to achieve their goals after high school.
Students in Long Island schools feel increasing pressure to go to college or university. Rigorous courses are becoming the norm, and the stress that comes with homework and studying for these classes is immense. Students from Long Island schools who plan to go to college practically have to take these types of classes to even be accepted into the school of their choice. In fact, 88% of graduates from Long Island schools enroll in colleges or universities.
But what about vocational students in Long Island schools? Their schools are experiencing an amount of cuts so drastic that they are being forced to turn students away from the education they want. Many Long Island School Districts must tell their vocational students that they cannot afford to enroll them in Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) job training courses in the fall of 2007. This is despite regulations New York state laws that entitle teenagers. access to professional training programs. In fact, state regulations require school districts, including those serving Long Island schools, to provide students with up to two years of BOCES occupational training, free of charge. Therefore, many of these Long Island Schools students are unable to receive the training they need to enter their chosen profession.
Long Island school officials have lamented the situation, but added that they have little choice. Budgets have had to be cut, and the cuts included $720,000 in BOCES tuition. The most likely reason for these cuts is the fact that Long Island voters have rejected spending plans twice.
It appears that if voters who live in areas that support Long Island schools don’t change their minds, hundreds of career students who attend one of Long Island’s many schools will miss out on the education they deserve . Maybe when they see their fast food restaurants and discount stores flooded with young high school graduates, they’ll change their minds. I hope.
