Teachers often say they worry that discipline will make children dislike and fear them. In fact, the opposite is true: children do not react negatively to being disciplined. how is that A recent example demonstrates the fact admirably…

In the city I met a group of small children. If you were less charitable, you might have described them as a gang, but they weren’t threatening or intimidating, so “group” is an apt description. The sun was bright so they were hard to spot.

As they approached, one of them let out a scream and ran towards me… Trouble in the shop? Not at all! He was a delighted 11-year-old boy who hugged an adult he recognized and liked very much. “Ms. Marsden, I haven’t seen you in years”… It was Jack, a former student…

She proudly said that she is doing brilliantly at school and is looking forward to moving on to senior school later this year. Well, apart from having to wear a sweater and tie! Jack explained how many friends he has, another thing that gives him great pleasure. The group he was with was obviously happy in his company.

How do I know Jack?

Jack was a disaster a few years ago and had been kicked out of nursery school because of his violence, confrontation and disruption. The teachers couldn’t do anything with him. I was only 6 years old and a virtual payback in school. The teachers were desperate: no matter what they did, there was no impact on his horrible behavior.

In came the ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and all’ brigade and after his numerous meetings had ended and his behavior management advice had failed, Jack set off in a different direction… A behavior unit …

Jack’s first day was a problem for him… When asked where his reading book was, his answer would have been anatomically impossible! The reaction to his response told him, very clearly, that such language would not be allowed and if he wanted to behave, he better change his language and behavior pretty quickly! It was quite obvious that no one had ever dealt with his behavior before. He got a very clear message that he had better improve his attitude.

But once a problem was solved, Jack soon learned that it was over. As long as he did the right thing he would receive lots of encouragement and reassurance. Follow the very simple rules and life would be good.

Jack couldn’t read very well and when you gave him a maths assignment he would literally shake with fear – I’ve never seen a child react so negatively. I had deep fears that needed to be acknowledged and dealt with. Adults should have unlimited understanding when a child has learning difficulties, but there should be no tolerance for bad behaviour. Adults should refuse to make excuses for bad behavior and stop it before it has a chance to take hold at school, or anywhere else!

There is no magic to managing children’s behavior. It’s about following the right behavior management strategies, at the right time and in the right way. So is Jack an unintelligent kid? Absolutely not, but he was very ill-mannered and so typical of so many children who demonstrated serious behavioral problems. He couldn’t do basic tasks, was frustrated and fell behind in his learning every day he went to school.

Did Jack now find himself in classes where there was no tolerance for any horrible behavior, a euphemism for being strict? But he also found that adults were willing to work with him to ease his many fears about learning. He was expected to work hard and independently, but he soon began to see good results.

What was Jack’s response to this new experience? He blossomed and began to enjoy learning. This did not transfer to his mainstream school at first, as it could only happen when the adults in the mainstream class learned to manage the behavior effectively. The adults there had to learn to control and manage their behavior, which they had not been able to do before.

So Jack’s welcoming of “a strict teacher” to today’s gathering was a perfect example of a child’s long-term reaction to having boundaries and limits on his behavior. A totally positive reaction and a boy who greets you with open arms, and in front of his friends! What a potential risk to your group with your friends!

Children desperately need to set boundaries and limits on their behavior. The teachers could have prevented much of Jack’s misery by treating him properly long before his behavior got totally out of control. In fact, they should have taken action as soon as he started misbehaving.

Any teacher can learn to deal with the Jacks of this world, or better yet, prevent them from becoming like Jack was in kindergarten. It’s what it’s like to be an adult. It is an adult responsibility to protect children from growing up without the essential discipline that allows them to mature with confidence and the right level of self-confidence. All adults should be able to manage children’s behavior confidently and effectively; it’s really not difficult.
