Active Learning – Are You the BULL or the MATADOR?
Active learning: God, what a battle!
You just want the kids to do something without whining. You know that effective teaching requires active learning. But sometimes you feel like the bull. Lots of cargo but getting nowhere fast. And you know where the bulls end up. Spanish hamburgers!
so which one are you The bull or the matador?
Don’t get me wrong. I hate bullfights. It’s the most cruel and disgusting sport out there. But it makes a great analogy.
The classroom environment.
Seats for active learning.
Seating really does have an impact on the classroom environment. The problem for relief teaching is that you have to put the tables and chairs back where they were. But if you’re prepared for that minor disruption, it can make all the difference.
There are basically 3 options here.
1. Sit the children at their desks, all facing the board.
- Minimal student interaction, not suitable for active learning but the classroom environment will be quieter.
- It lends itself well to effective teaching if keeping children quiet is a goal.
- I use it for very controlled teacher-led instruction.
- It is the least preferred option for active learning.
- It is definitely not suitable for peer tutoring as you need to baffle the whole room to create workgroups.
2. In groups.
- This is a good classroom environment for group work. It’s easy to communicate with peers, so peer-to-peer tutoring is possible. In fact, this is the best solution if your teaching strategies offer a lot of peer tutoring.
- Best suited for tutoring and peer discussion in math, language, girlfriends, last saturday’s football game, justin beiber hairstyle is definitely easy with this structure.
- Keeping kids at work is a full-time job.
- I use it for lower end teaching strategies and activities where chatter won’t interfere with effective teaching. (Art, construction, research).
- Invariably, some misbehaving little one will find himself sitting alone because he can’t control himself, or rather, your teaching strategies allow for too much active learning from HIM.
3. Horseshoe shaped.
- This is suitable for a range of teaching strategies that focus on active learning.

Active learning of writing.

I like it because it takes the pressure off you and puts it on the kids. you are the killer and the children are the bulls.
You are turning them around and deceiving them. The success of this activity is determined by your material skills.
I start my relief teaching day like a bull at the gate (imagine the bull has just been released in the ring) rather than a red-caped matador, so I save that for after the ‘lunch time when my energies are lowest. (Hey, I miss my poppy nap when I work!)
I have used this strategy often with middle and upper elementary, but it could be adapted for middle school students.

I have also included a well laid out strategy to achieve this.
In essence, you fire the kids and get them to write without interruption and quickly in bursts. I find 3 minutes of shoots sufficient.

It really is effective teaching at its best and definitely one to have in your bag of teaching tricks.

I love to start like the bull. Enter the classroom to the cheers of the crowd. Stamp and stomp and dare someone to catch me.
And they, when the time is right, I become the killer who cheats active learning, taking students to participate here and there.
